“I feel overwhelmed. I don’t know where to start. I have so much weight to lose, it feels impossible.” These could be my words from the last 20 years, but they are the words that make up most of the e-mails I receive since my episode aired. I spent years with those same thoughts and overwhelmed feelings, not sure that I could ever actually lose weight and get healthy. But, I did. And I truly believe when someone makes the decision that, “This is it, I’m doing it.” They can succeed too.
“How do I get started?” The simple answer is to just start. Start walking, start drinking more water, start eating better, start cutting sodium. Choose one, or choose them all. But just make a choice and do it! It sounds simple, and it really can be. Once your mind has decided that it’s go time, there is nothing stopping you from succeeding.
I realize that there are countless women who have started and stopped. Lost and gained. Made a commitment to change, and broken it. I was one of them. But there is no rule that says that you only get one chance, or 30 chances. You always have the opportunity to do better, to make changes, to get the weight off. It’s always a choice. And it’s your choice. You can choose today that you will no longer allow yourself to be last on your list of commitments. You can choose today to make changes. You can choose to start now.
“But, it seems too overwhelming. I can’t imagine actually losing 100 pounds!” Don’t worry about the 100, the 50, or the 30. Whatever you have to lose, it still comes off one pound at a time. On a healthy plan, the average weight lost is 2 pounds a week. If you start today, you could lose 104 pounds by this time next year! Slow and steady wins the race. Don’t look at losing all of it. Decide what you can do today to move you towards your goal.
Take a realistic look at your life. What is stopping you from getting started? Why do you feel stuck? Assess your daily life and find a way to make it work for you.
- Do you work and then head straight to practice or ball games with the kids? Then maybe some nice brisk 5am walks are in your future.
- Do you find yourself eating out all the time because it’s easier than rushing home to cook? I have two words for you. Food. Prep. Spend some time during the weekend preparing for your week.
- Do you feel like you need a gym and can’t afford one? Google 20 minute workouts, and go for it! There are tons of them. It doesn’t take any equipment to move your body. Walking, running, push ups, sit-ups, squats. They are all free! And they all will help you burn fat.
I know that there is never a perfect time to start anything. If you wait until life slows down, until after the holidays, after (insert kid’s sports season here), until after this project at work, you will always be waiting, never starting. I spent years thinking if I can just get through volleyball season, I’ll do better. Volleyball is over in October, which begins the craziest three months of the year as a retail manager. So, then I would tell my self “I’ll start after the holidays”. Always putting it off, always finding an excuse. Always letting life get in the way.
Whatever it is that has kept you from getting started, find a way to get past it! Life is too short to not be the person you were meant to be. I spent 20 years feeling like an impostor. My obesity hid the person I knew I was supposed to be. I am supposed to be an athlete. I am supposed to be confident. I am supposed to be outgoing. That fat body of mine did not allow me to be who I knew I was supposed to me. There is a quote I love: “It is never too late to be what you might have been”- George Eliot. (Click to Tweet this) Don’t allow life to go by and not be who you might have been. Be who you are supposed to be!
If your weight is keeping you from being that person, then isn’t it time to get started? Don’t spend another day waiting. Don’t spend another minute lost, scared, and overwhelmed. Get started. Today is your day!
